Protect Your Home
The average American household produces about 20 pounds of hazardous waste each year by using products like paint, solvents, cleaners,
fertilizers and pesticides. When put in the trash, these products can pollute the water and air. When kept in the home, they can be unsafe for children and pets.
Below are some ways that you can safely dispose of hazardous waste, and avoid creating it in the first place.
Tip #1 — Choose Eco-Friendly Cleaners
The Environmental Protection Agency has certified a number of household products as “DfE” — Designed for the Environment.
There are many cleaners that are now completely nontoxic, biodegradable and made from renewable resources (not petroleum).
Tip #2 — Use Alternative Pest Control Methods
Several types of plants act as natural deterrents to common garden pests. For example, planting marigolds alongside other plants protects your garden from many types of beetles.
There are also natural and organic products that will kill insects and other
pests without exposing your family to toxins.
Tip #3 — Use Special Collection Sites for Disposal
Your town may have designated facilities or collection days to help you get hazardous waste out of your home and keep it out of our landfills.
Programs often accept toxic materials like dangerous chemicals, batteries, oil, propane tanks and compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) for recycling.
Rockys is also currently developing our own community recycling program to provide our customers with a convenient collection location.
