Recycling at Rocky’s
Why recycle CFLs?
Each year, approximately 670 million fluorescent light bulbs are sent to landfills or incinerated in the U.S., which releases 2 to 4 tons of elemental mercury into the environment. This mercury can accumulate in animals and plants and contaminate the food chain. You can also expose yourself and your family to mercury by disposing of CFLs in your trash. To prevent the release of mercury, CFLs should be taken to a recycler before they break. Recyclers can recover the mercury and other components for reuse. CFL recycling is also required in certain states, including Massachusetts.
Why use CFLs?
Rocky’s encourages its customers to use CFLs because they are an energy-efficient and cost-effective alternative to regular incandescent light bulbs. A compact fluorescent light bulb fits in a regular light bulb socket or can be plugged into a small lighting fixture. They use 66% less energy than incandescent light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. Every CFL can keep more than 400 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions out of the atmosphere.Plus, CFLs can save you money. Rocky’s wants to make it simple and safe for everyone to use this efficient form of lighting. You can recycle all of your CFLs with us, even if you did not buy them at a Rocky’s store.
